PART 10: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA—TOO MANY PEOPLE

By Frosty Wooldridge
Part 10: too many people, too little water, too little energy, too little resources

In a brilliantly written book, Too Many People by Lindsey Grant, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment and Population Affairs, he brought a lifetime of global experience into his profoundly direct book.

No matter how much the mainstream media, which includes all major television networks, radio and print—do, to avoid, ignore and evade the population issue—it rears its ugly head in every newscast—daily across the United States and around the world.

Notice how National Public Radio, Public Broadcasting Service and local TV stations do not mention or engage any connection of any problem of “too many people.” For example: if you wander through the streets of India, their ‘sacred cow’ is actually a cow. And, those cows by the hundreds of thousands wonder all over the streets in India, creating horrid cow waste, urine waste and generally mess up everything, but since Indians consider them ‘sacred’, no one will do anything about them.

While ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and FOX report on terrible problems with collapsing fisheries, extinction rates, air pollution, acidified oceans and climate destabilization—they won’t touch the ‘sacred cow’ of human overpopulation. They cannot avoid its brutal reality much longer.

“In this essay, I will survey the current evidence and make the case that we can turn the present deteriorating system around only by ending infatuation with growth and embracing the idea of a return to a smaller population,” said Grant. “Our future depends on learning to come into better balance with the rest of nature and to find a sustainable relationship we have yet to achieve.”

SOMETHING NEW ON EARTH

“Human systems have grown to the point at which the damage we do has become intolerable, not only to other species,[Human encroachment causes the extinction of 80 to 100 species daily around the globe. The die-off is so great that it is called the ‘sixth extinction’ session.], and thus, dangerous to our own future,” said Grant. “As our problems have been caused or compounded by the growth of populations and economic activity, their solutions requires that we turn growth around.”

Consequently, we stand at a critical juncture as indicated by Dr. Jack Alpert, www.skil.org, where he calls for a ‘rapid population decline’ of one child per woman worldwide if we are to survive the 21st century. He makes the cogent case, that if we desire to live at the present wealth and resource use level as the United States, we must drop to 100 million humans worldwide. If we fail to make the drop gracefully by birth control and family planning, Mother Nature will do it for us, rather brutally. See Alpert’s video: Rapid Population Decline, seven minute video by Dr. Jack Alpert- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTWduFB_RX0

Grant states the ugly obvious, “All these issues have a self-evident connection to population growth. I find it astonishing that the technically literate seldom touch upon that connection and never—almost literally never—mention population policy as part of the solution.”

Energy expert Richard Heinberg said the same thing after last year’s Global Climate Conference in Denmark:

"...the discussions in Denmark took place in a conceptual fantasy world in which climate change is the only global crisis that matters much; in which rapid economic growth is still an option; in which fossil fuels are practically limitless; in which a western middle class staring at the prospect of penury can be persuaded voluntarily to transfer a significant portion of its rapidly evaporating wealth to other nations; in which subsistence farmers in poor nations should all aspire to become middle-class urbanites; and in which the subject of human overpopulation can barely be mentioned.

... It's no wonder more wasn't achieved in Copenhagen." http://us1.campaign-archive.com/?u=311db31977054c5ef58219392&id=1853646c28&e=411677039a

In Grant’s second chapter, he hits on the simple reality of our predicament, “The United States’ population was 75 million in 1900. It is now about 275 million. It may well grow to 404 million by 2050. Migration pressure is a product of overcrowding on the land, of unemployment and wage differentials, all of which are driven by population growth. Those driving forces would subside if somehow the growth should stop or turn around.” [Too Many People published in 2000, and by October 2006, U.S. population reached 300 million. Current predictions say U.S. will reach 438 million by 2050, which shows how fast population has exceeded Grant’s predictions.]

FASTER AND FASTER TO A HIGHLY DESTRUCTIVE ENDING

In my world travels, I witnessed horrific ocean damage in dead zones at the mouths of rivers out of the U.S., China, India, Brazil and Europe. Really ugly stuff! Also, it’s beyond imagination that humans could and are, for the past 20 years, killing 100 million sharks annually. Humans ‘clear cut’ the oceans with 40 mile long drift nets that grab everything and kill it. Then, when cut away and left hanging on reefs, those plastic nets continue slaughtering millions of hapless marine creatures forever.

“The whole world is engaged in a pell-mell race to grow faster—driving toward an impossible objective. It is a daunting objective: the idea of a race to increase economic activity in a world already under stress,” said Grant.

THE FINAL ARBITERS FOR HUMAN EXPANION: WATER AND FOOD

While we enjoyed the ‘green revolution’ to produce more food back in the 1970s, it unfortunately resulted in another three billion humans added to planet in a blink of time.

To give you an idea of how crazy our human predicament: Bangladesh, with a landmass the size of Iowa, carries an astounding 144 million people. Demographers predict they will add another 100 million in 40 years with their extraordinary birthrates. Canadian environmentalist Tim Murray laments, “Humans are too dumb to survive.”
Currently, you can look this up: 18 million human beings die of starvation or starvation related diseases annually around the world. (Source: World Health Organization) That’s eight million adults and 10 million children.
Grant talks about food and we will address that in the next part of this series.

PART 9: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA—EXPAND INTO WHAT?

By Frosty Wooldridge

Part 9: As small towns expand into big towns, the costs, the pain, the results ain’t so hot, innumerates and idiots share the same bed

This week, in the Denver Post, a journalist wrote a story that celebrated the addition of 600,000 people to Denver area in the last two years. Mind you, that Denver suffers 2.25 million residents and a toxic Brown Cloud loaded with nastiness for everyone’s lungs with every breath. Denverites must endure endless gridlocked traffic, two dozen auto crashes daily, more than a few ‘flipped birds’ thrown, road rage, potholes, cracking and degrading bridges, and a host of other tensions created by a large city.

Nonetheless, the journalist reported a happy city council member saying, ““It’s exciting,” said City Council woman Judy Montero. “Hopefully, the growth will continue….”

That’s like telling a 440 pound competitor on the TV game show “Biggest Losers” to go out and eat an entire grocery store full of food to help him or her win the contest and prize money! Include, please, the cardiac unit with the eating program!

Unfortunately, not one person enjoyed an interview to expose the consequences of that 600,000 people added to Denver! The piece ‘celebrated’ growth as the Denver Post has for many decades. Not one mention of severe air pollution, lung diseases, emphysema, water shortages building along the front range, horrendous gridlock and environmental degradation.

"Can you think of any problem in any area of human endeavor on any scale, from microscopic to global, whose long-term solution is in any demonstrable way aided, assisted, or advanced by further increases in population, locally, nationally, or globally?" Prof. Al Bartlett

Dr. Albert Bartlett, professor of Physics, emeritus, University of Colorado, www.albartlett.org , wrote a most compelling article in the Daily Camera, Boulder, Colorado, February 3, 2008, “What part of arithmetic does not hold in Boulder?” that needs to be read by every governor, senator, House rep and city council member across the United States. I consider it the most important thesis of the 21st century.
Harvard researcher E.O. Wilson echoes Bartlett’s words, “The raging monster upon the land is population growth. In its presence, sustainability is but a fragile theoretical construct. To say, as many do, that the difficulties of nations are not due to people but to poor ideology and land-use management is sophistic.”
The question grows, “How can the Denver Post editors celebrate growth that has brought so many problems to that city, and, if it grows to its expected doubling to four million, how can they think anything will be improved?”
Dr. Bartlett answers that, “It’s not clear why the legislature would think that the people would want all these known consequences of growth. However, innumeracy reigns. The promoters have demonstrated great skill in using public innumeracy to get around minor details like the “will of the people.”
“In the meantime, the innumerates act as though gasoline, natural gas and water will always be with us at low cost and in unlimited quantities. Crude oil prices have increased from $20 a barrel in 2002 to $100 a barrel in 2008. This largely suggests that the world production of conventional oil peaked and is starting its inevitable decline, just as was predicted in 1956.
“If this rate of increase continues, we would look for oil to cost $500 a barrel in another in six years or 2014. [Read the book, $20 a gallon, by Chris Steiner at Forbes Magazine] Natural gas production in North America has peaked, and this accounts for the rapid rise in the price of natural gas, which is already creating hardships for some who like to have a warm home or comfortable workplace in winter.
“Water shortages and talk of restrictions on water use are frequently in the news. By their continued promotion of growth, the innumerates are speeding the arrival of painful but predictable water shortages and consequent rationing of gasoline, natural gas and water in the Rocky Mountain area. These shortages and the accompanying high prices will remake the urban landscape in ways that are probably not included in current “long-range” planning efforts of the city, county and state. These problems cannot be solved by a nickel’s worth of “Smart Growth” tacked onto billions of dollars worth of urban sprawl.
“The arithmetic of population, resources and growth is inexorable. The consequences of the arithmetic cannot be avoided by believing that “wishing will make it so” (Walt Disney’s First Law).
“Many years ago, an innumerate graduate of the University of Colorado wrote to me saying, that he did not believe that this arithmetic of growth holds in Boulder. What part of the arithmetic of growth is it that innumerates don’t understand.”
Dr. Bartlett has given his celebrated lecture, Arithmetic, Population and Energy over 1,600 times. His collected writings have been published in the book, "The Essential Exponential! For the Future of Our Planet". www.albartlett.org
Fellow citizens, we do not want to manifest what he demonstrates in that lecture! Trust me, I have seen it all across Asia in my bicycle travels. The results of ‘innumeracy’ prove quite incompatible with human comfort and/or existence! Ask anyone from Bangladesh or Mexico City!

NINE YEAR NIGHTMARE IN AFGHANISTAN MUST STOP

By Frosty Wooldridge

Each day, after listening to the news or reading a newspaper, I am sickened at the consummate insanity of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. It’s sheer, unadulterated lunacy to continue those two wars—after nine years! It’s incredible that our country sinks into $12 trillion in debt, horrific infrastructure degradation and complete lack of leadership.

I thought after the duplicity, stupidity and immorality of the Vietnam War that killed 53,200 Americans and several million Vietnamese, and poisoned their country with Agent Orange and bombs, we would never again engage in such madness. Nonetheless, the “Great Silent Majority” stood by to watch their kids die—for nothing! History proved that!

Yet, it’s beyond my logical understanding at how stupid our leaders, former President Bush, and now, Barack Obama—prove themselves. Bush attacked with no idea of what he perpetrated on an entire society. He created 2.5 million refugees. He destroyed their infrastructure. He killed hundreds of thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan.

What does he have to show for it? Nothing but human misery for theirs and ours! Yet, he lives in a million dollar mansion in Dallas! He’s too stupid to understand what he wrought on humanity or too immoral.

Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. The entire world wants us out of the Middle East and the Nobel must have given him a hint. But no, he added another 30,000 of our kids to go kill another 30,000 of their kids.

What will he have to show for it? In the end, more human misery and suffering on both sides!

In the current issue of Newsweek Magazine, “The gang that couldn’t shoot straight” by Miller, Hosenball and Moreau, readers gained an understanding of just how futile, hopeless and completely deranged we are as we meddle in another third world country’s business.

We spent $6 billion to train 170,000 Afghan police. “Only 30,000 remain on the force…”We are still at zero,” said Captain Moqim. “They don’t listen, are undisciplined, and will never be real policemen.”

We wage war on a country, like Afghanistan, without one single jet plane, helicopter or tank. Most Afghans grow crops, milk goats, herd sheep and live like they did 1,000 years ago. They’re ancient Muslims with no idea of Western sophistication, governance or customs. They practice their own!

“Roughly 15 percent of recruits test positive for drugs, few know how to use a toothbrush or drive a car, and 90 percent are illiterate,” said Newsweek writers.

The irony of that figure on illiteracy: no form of democracy can survive illiteracy.

We have not accomplished anything other than death for the past nine years in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s disgusting, sickening and humanly obscene to kill that many people and cause THAT much misery, and pretend we have done ‘good’ in that country.

Jefferson, Franklin and Washington proved infinitely more intelligent than Bush or Obama. Washington said it best, “No country can be trusted beyond its own self-interests. Habitual friendship toward a foreign country is as dangerous as habitual enmity. The policy of America should be trade with all, but entangling alliances with nobody. The quarrels and vendettas in other parts of the world are not our business. All countries should be treated equal, with no favors granted to any of them.”

"I have always given it as my decided opinion that no nation has a right to intermeddle in the internal concerns of another; that everyone has a right to form and adopt whatever government they liked best to live under themselves; and that if this country could, consistently with its engagements, maintain a strict neutrality and thereby preserve peace, it was bound to do so by motives of policy, interest, and every other consideration. - George Washington, from Letter to James Monroe, August 25,1796.

But here we stand in 2010, mired in an endless war, endless death, endless expense—and no end in sight. At the same time, the American people offer up their kids to be chewed up by IEDs, suicides and complete breakdown via emotional trauma. Over 175,000 to 200,000 U.S. combat troops committed suicide after Vietnam. We do not understand the human toll and suicides growing in our country from these current two wars.

Last week, a friend of mine talked about how a 24 year old kid in his hometown, came back from one tour in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, and two weeks ago, shoved a pistol into his mouth and ended his life. That will happen thousands, if not tens of thousands of times in the coming years.

The “War on Terror” remains a standing joke as our borders remain open, available and unguarded. We have injected millions of Islamic immigrants and potential suicide bombers into our country. I swear the U.S. Congress and the last president and now today, this president, possess scrambled eggs for brains. And the American people, even less for electing those guys.

PART 8: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA—ENDLESS GROWTH LEADS TO LOWERED QUALITY OF LIFE

By Frosty Wooldridge

Part 8: Unending growth in humans equates to obesity, diabetes, cancer, ill health; relentless growth in cities results in clogged highways, toxic air, road rage, tension and compacted living

The United States finds itself in a devil of a predicament. Yet, its citizens don’t realize it. None of its national leaders acknowledge it. The media avoids and ignores it at all costs. If you asked the average citizen on the street what they thought about adding 100 million people to this country in the next 25 years, you would receive a response like this, “Really! Not my problem.”

EXPLODING SMALL TOWN AND BIG TOWN AMERICA BEYOND LIMITS

This same phenomenon occurs to every small, medium and large town in America as this country adds 3.1 million people, net gain per year, on our way to adding 100 million by 2035, and 138 million by 2050.

As a young math and science teacher, I moved to Boulder in 1973 with 40,000 residents. Quiet town, no traffic, clean air, houses at $35,000.00, nickel for one hour parking meters and peaceful vistas—and great sunrises on the eastern plains dotted with cows! Nearly 40 years later, over 100,000 residents, horribly costly homes, brown cloud, choked highways, .25 gets you 10 minutes on parking meter, and you cannot see bucolic sunrises because the plains suffer housing all the way to Brighton 25 miles away. Not to mention a monster of a mountain of trash from the landfill that grows higher and fatter daily!

One of the growth advocates in Boulder said, “So our choice is not whether we grow, but how we grow.”

That’s like a 5’10” 200 pound man saying, “Well, I don’t have a choice as to how fat I get, so I guess I’ll keep eating a gallon of ice cream every night before bed to find out what happens.”

Dr. Bartlett wrote the most profound response to such idiocy, “It’s time to try again to correct the educationally credentialed but innumerate experts who say that growth is inevitable. Innumeracy is the mathematical equivalent of illiteracy.

“They fail to recognize that after maturity, continued growth is either obesity or cancer. The arithmetic is clear. Steady growth produces impossibly large numbers in modest periods of time. So, growth will stop! Referring to Boulder, we have read the innumerate statement, “so our choice is not whether we grow, but how we grow.”

“The authors of this statement would like us to believe that the battle against growth is lost, so our only role is to be the best possible losers. They write that we should give up the efforts to achieve a quiet stability for our community, and in defeat, we should embrace the principles of “Smart Growth.” We can understand this. That’s the game in which they are all the big winners.”

SMART GROWTH, DUMB GROWTH, SLOW GROWTH, MANAGED GROWTH ALL MEAN AN UNSUSTAINABLE FUTURE

“We must remember that “Smart Growth” and “Dumb Growth” both destroy the environment with good taste,” said Bartlett.

To which I answered, “Growth is not the answer; it’s the problem!”

“”The central belief of the growth promotion community seems to be that there is an “absolute need to create greater population density and more efficient land use within the city” by focusing on the “infill development within existing urban boundaries,” said Bartlett. “When the promoters tried this tactic on the Washington School neighborhood, all of Boulder fought back, saying that we’re not going to become losers in the city’s effort to cram more people into Boulder. The whole city is watching to see if the City Council will continue policies that reflect innumeracy and unsustainability.

“The innumerate theme of the promoters is, “The Front Range is going to grow whether we like it or not.” If this is true, it is because so many Front Range leaders are active and successful in promoting growth. The legislature and all manner of public and private regional and local “civic groups” are promoting “economic development,” which is the politically correct name for “growth.” Predictably, this will produce more well-to-do people, more homeless, more employed people, more unemployed people, higher average salaries, more people living below the poverty line, more traffic congestion, higher parking fees, more school crowding, more crime, more unhappy neighborhoods, more expensive government, more tax revenue, higher taxes, more fiscal problems for state and local governments, more air and water pollution, higher utility costs, less reliable utility service, less democracy, more congestion pricing on busy city streets and crowded highways, more unmanageable costs of maintaining public infrastructure, higher food costs and more destruction of the environment.”

Is this happening in your town? Probably! I moved out of Boulder 20 years ago to Louisville a smaller town of 20,000 residents. Why would anyone advocate for constant growth, knowing the consequences? Again, innumerates reign supreme because they possess the money and thus the power to be stupid!

STUPIDITY, IN THE LONG TERM, WILL COST MORE THAN INTELLIGENT CHOICES

Another top thinker takes Bartlett’s theme to the whole of our civilization. Walter Youngquist said, “As we go from this happy hydrocarbon bubble we have reached now to a renewable energy resource economy, which we must do in this century, will the “civil” part of civilization survive? As we both know there is no way that alternative energy sources can supply the amount of per capita energy we enjoy now, much less for the 9 billion expected by 2050. And energy is what keeps this game going. We are involved in a Faustian bargain—selling our economic souls for the luxurious life of the moment, but sooner or later the price has to be paid.”

Next part: finishing Dr. Bartlett’s thesis as to “growth”.

PART 7: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA-QUALITY OF LIFE IN AN OVERCROWDED WORLD

By Frosty Wooldridge
Part 7: Quality of life, big cities, crowding, gridlock, human spirit

My friend John Muir, the first environmentalist, said many years ago, “Tell me what you will of the benefactions of city civilization, of the sweet security of streets---all as part of the natural up-growth of man towards the high destiny we hear so much of. I know that our bodies were made to thrive only in pure air, and the scenes in which pure air is found. If the death exhalations that brood the broad towns in which we so fondly compact ourselves were made visible, we should flee as from a plague. All are more or less sick; there is not a perfectly sane man in all of San Francisco.”

Nor, for that matter, in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston and Denver as well as most other overcrowded, gridlocked and congested cities swarming with too many people. How can anyone love breathing toxic air, drive a car in bumper-to-bumper traffic, deal with road rage in others and themselves, and stack themselves up in tiny cubicle apartment buildings? They call it living? I pitch other words into the circle: loss of spirit, loss of community, loss of grass, loss of connection with nature!

UNITED STATES ON ITS WAY TO ADDING 100 MILLION PEOPLE IN 25 YEARS

The bigger the city, the more crazy and unbalanced people multiply in it. Muir wasn’t far off in his exclamation that not a single sane man lived in “City by the Bay” that Tony Bennett sang about with his mesmerizing love song, “I left my heart in….”

In big cities, you hear fire engines screaming, ambulances flashing in the night, police sirens at all hours, honking horns, gridlocked traffic, train whistles blowing, so many citizens flipping the bird at one another, beggars on every corner and a loss of connection as everyone sees everyone else as a threat. No one looks anyone in the eyes while walking down the street for fear of…name the phobia. For visuals, graffiti adorns millions of city buildings.

At one time, Detroit, Michigan, at its zenith, became known as the “Murder Capitol of the World.” I worked there for 15 years to witness it. I mean, those boys shot up the joint. Over one million people fled the city in the last 30 years to leave it a wasteland. They fled car-jackings at stop lights. Drugs flowed everywhere and desperate people overwhelmed homeless shelters.

Every kind of sickening human behavior manifests in big cities: incest of five year old girls, animal cruelty, child cruelty, misogyny, rape, murder, sex trafficking, entrenched poverty, illiteracy, drugs, shoplifting, burglaries, arson and every kind of aberrant human behavior!

Today, Phoenix, Arizona, a big city, suffers 57,000 cars stolen annually. (Source: Department of Motor Vehicles, AZ) Its schools suffer violence from the sixth grade onward. Los Angeles finds itself picking up millions of pounds of trash left out in the streets by anyone with a car and a bag. Schools suffer over 100 languages and less than 50 percent graduation rates from high schools. It’s so bad, police won’t patrol in the 20,000 members of the “18th Street Gang”.

As with the MS-13 gangs, now operating in 30 states with over 20,000 members, they distribute drugs and make an estimated 900,000 U.S. teenagers drug dealers. Most follow a life of crime until arrested or killed.

AN AVERAGE OF 30,000 AMERICANS COMMIT SUICIDE ANNUALLY

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated 52,447 deliberate and 23,237 accidental non-fatal gunshot injuries in the United States during 2000. The majority of gun-related deaths in the United States are suicides, with firearms used in 16,907 suicides in the United States during 2004. An average of 29,000 Americans commit suicide annually by all forms. Where? In cities! John Muir made a point!

Many years ago, Itzhak Bentov wrote a book: Stalking the Wild Pendulum. In the work, he noted how everything in the universe ‘vibrates’ at certain calibrations. Everything works in ‘harmony’ with rocks, dirt, water, fire, air, wind, rain, etc. Humans vibrate at something like seven megahertz a second, but I forgot the actual figure.

In the book, he noted how Western humanity slowly drove itself crazy via living in cities with boxed dwellings, driving in steel and glass-enclosed cars at 60 mile per hour, walking on concrete and rarely able to venture out of its concrete jungle to the serendipity of the wilderness—from which all humans evolved over millions of years.

Thus, humans in cities suffered a loss of their natural rhythms, their natural ‘vibrations’ that worked within the realm of nature. As they lost touch with nature, they became more and more ‘un-harmonic’ with their eco-system. Some take weekends off to sit by a river, or in the wilderness via camping or by the beach to ‘reharmonize’ their vibrations. They learned how to cope with their city environment.

Most city dwellers, cannot travel out into the wilderness, therefore, they remain ‘un-harmonic’, and spiritually and physically distressed. Those individuals found ways to cope by smoking, drinking, drug usage, overeating and a dozen other activities to cope with their ‘distress’ or lack of internal harmony with nature. Obviously, they all suffer a form of emotional, spiritual and physical disharmony that degrades their quality of life with headaches, stress, anger and a myriad of problems they can never figure out, nor can they solve as long as they live in the city.

The fact is, if you read Desmond Morris’ The Naked Ape or Robert Audrey’s African Genesis and Territorial Imperative, we remain animals, albeit animals that think, yet we require the natural vibrations of the wilderness in order to remain mentally, physically and spiritually connected and healthy.

Cities breed a collective unhealthiness featured every evening on the news in every major city in the world. The bigger the city, the more killings and other aberrant behaviors. The smaller the city, the less the mayhem. And, when you visit cities of less than 1,000, they suffer virtually no crime whatsoever. Everybody knows each other and community binds them to a common tribe and identity.

If we, as a civilization allow another 100 million people to be added to America, and then, another 100 million and 200 million beyond that, we shall see our civilization delivered into a kind of ‘madness’ or unhealthiness heretofore never experienced in the United States. You can see the results in Mexico City with 24 million, or in 28 million in Tokyo, Japan, or Mumbai, India with 18 million, San Paulo, Brazil with 17 million, Shanghai, China with 14 million, Los Angeles with 13 million.

I have visited those places. Pretty depressing on every level! Do we want that for our country, our cities, and our civilization? I would venture to say that you are rotating your head in the negative. What are you going to do about it?

“Scientists remind us that nature intended human beings should spend most of their hours beneath open skies. With appetites sharpened by outdoor living, they should eat plain food. They should live at their natural God-given paces, un-oppressed by the artificial hurry and tension of man-made civilization. “Yet the mass of city men, stalking their meat at the crowded market instead of in the green woods or the cool marshes, put up with existences of quiet desperation. Their incessant anxiety and strain is a well-nigh incurable form of disease.” – Col. Townsend Whelen 1877 – 1961

Would you agree with my friend John Muir? “Tell me what you will of the benefactions of city civilization, of the sweet security of streets---all as part of the natural up-growth of man towards the high destiny we hear so much of.

SLAVERY OF BLACKS IN 1860 TO SLAVERY OF MEXICANS IN 2010

By Frosty Wooldridge

The march on Washington DC this past Sunday by illegal aliens and their advocates promoted illegality to legality, criminal activity to lawful manifestation and the U.S. Constitution to the trash heap of history. The march bet that crime does pay and that criminals deserve citizenship and that lawful American citizens must pay for everything to accept criminal illegal aliens in America. What will be that cost? The Heritage Foundation projected a cost of between $3 trillion to $5 trillion depending on the final count of illegal aliens that gain amnesty. If the total hits 25 to 30 million as some sources state, that cost would rise concurrently.

What caused the march? Who stands at fault? What will be done? How will it end up?

Look to the past four presidents and the last four congresses to find the evil, the dirt, the duplicity of men and women avoiding their oaths of office.

SLAVERY IN 1860 OF AMERICAN BLACKS AND ITS ULTIMATE CONSEQUECES: CIVIL WAR

In 1860, Mark Twain wrote, “A man didn't invent the law; it is merely his business to obey it and keep still; join the universal conspiracy and keep so still that he shall deceive his fellow-conspirators into imagining that he doesn't know that the law exists. It is what we all do--we that know. I am speaking of the lie of silent assertion; we can tell it without saying a word, and we all do it--we that know. In the magnitude of its territorial spread it is one of the most majestic lies that civilizations make it their sacred and anxious care to guard and watch and propagate.

“For instance. It would not be possible for a humane and intelligent person to invent a rational excuse for slavery; yet you will remember that in the early days of the emancipation agitation in the North, the agitators got but small help or countenance from any one. Argue and plead and pray as they might, they could not break the universal stillness that reigned, from pulpit and press all the way down to the bottom of society--the clammy stillness created and maintained by the lie of silent assertion--the silent assertion that there wasn't anything going on in which humane and intelligent people were interested.”

Twain, also said, “Suppose you were an idiot; and suppose you were a member of Congress; ah, but I repeat myself.”

Back in 1860, the lie of silent assertion caused a states-rights rebellion in the south, and ultimately the question of slavery cost America 620,000 men and women in the Civil War that followed.

Silent assertion continues as the U.S. Congress and president, “Lie, obfuscate, suppress, ignore and deny a social wrong or condition.” While they ignored it during the entire process of forming this nation, it boiled over for decades until it received attention and resolve in the Civil War. At horrible cost!

Final reality: slavery proves wrong, immoral, unethical and cannot and does not fit into the U.S. Constitution.

Why did it persist in America? Money, big money and more money for the landed gentry, the few rich and the elites!

MEXICANS AS SLAVES IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA

Today, the same slave holders, American employers of illegal aliens, operate in silent-assertion everywhere across America where over 20 million illegal aliens, modern day slaves, toil at wages that allow them only to eat and house themselves. They live in the shadows, not part of America, like the Blacks back in 1860, but used and abused at will. Are they happy? Not really, but they are happier than living in their third world countries where entrenched poverty manifests so much that they cannot enjoy the barest of menial accommodations such as toilets, clean water and a decent life.

But, much like the silent-assertion that created the Civil War in 1860, those 21st century slaves marching on Washington DC last Sunday, represent a still greater danger to the breakdown of the United States. They demand lawful access to this nation’s educational, medical, Social Security, housing, food stamps, insurance, welfare and other systems through their unlawful actions. In other words, turn this country into the same country they fled.

In a report in the Denver Post, March 21, 2010, “The war next door”, Charles Bowden reported that 17,000 Mexican civilians lost their lives in Mexico via the drug cartels in the past 36 months. Mexico represents a failed state in the Western Hemisphere, just like Haiti.

If the U.S. Congress passes another amnesty like it did in 1986, it will unleash a legal accommodation of 20 to 30 million people with no allegiance to or investment in the United States of America, our culture, language or lawful way of life. Once initiated, this flood of humanity will inundate every level and every sector of the every community in America. It will profoundly change what America was into something that Americans don’t want to become: another Mexico; another third world country.

POVERTY BEGETS POVERTY, ILLITERACY BEGETS ILLITERACY, LAWLESSNESS BEGETS MORE LAWLESSNESS

As this amnesty beat grows, I urge you to join Roy Beck at www.numbersusa.com and add your voice to enforcing our laws and saving our communities from this 21st century slavery as well as relentless immigration and crime upon our country. If you fail, you fail your children and future generations. Out of the next 100 million people projected population added to this country in the next 25 years, over 70 million will be third world immigrants and their children. Look to Detroit, Chicago, Miami, Houston and Los Angeles for examples of what will become of your cities across America.

PART 6: OVERPOPULATION IN 21ST CENTURY AMERICA—ACCELERATED POISONING OF OUR WORLD

By Frosty Wooldridge

Part 6: Farm pollution, pig pollution, incinerator pollution, plastics

“What you don’t know won’t hurt you,” my grandfather used to tell me. “Leave well enough alone and you’ll get along better in this world.”

That sage advice used to work back in the 20th century, but not today. None of us can take for granted in the 21st century that others, in responsible positions, will do the right thing by all of us. After reading Part 5 of this series, countless Americans could not comprehend how fellow citizens in high positions of trust, and knowing the incredible toxic danger of radioactive and mustard gas waste—still dumped millions of tons of it into our oceans over the decades!

Back in the 1960s, our “What you don’t know won’t hurt you” naiveté began to backfire as cancers leaped into the national consciousness. Soon, in the 1970s, we created the Environmental Protection Agency to combat horrific toxic dump sites where rivers ignited in flames and fish died by the millions—but then, instead of “out of sight, out of mind”, the poisons came home to roost in our back yards.

In “America’s nastiest toxic waste dumps” by Chris Weber, he said, “Superfund is both an actual fund and a shorthand term for the list of America’s nastiest toxic waste sites. One in two Americans lives within ten miles of a Superfund site. Currently, there are about 1,300 sites on the list. New Jersey has the most Superfund sites, with over a hundred. Nevada and the District of Columbia have one apiece. Here’s a closer look at some of the notable ones.”

Love Canal is the granddaddy of Superfund sites. “Spurred by Love Canal, Congress levied a special tax on oil and chemical companies to clean up such sites,” said Weber. “It raised $1.8 billion—plenty, they assumed, to clean up all the toxic waste in the country. But as more and more toxic sites were identified—at one point, 30,000 were nominated.”

“Though New Jersey has the most Superfund sites, the most polluted place in the nation may be Anniston, Alabama, where Monsanto ran a huge chemical manufacturing plant,” said Weber. “The company paid out $700 million to residents in 2003.”

How the U.S. Became a Toxic Dumping Ground by Mark Schapiro

“If The Hague had a list of chemical war criminals, the dozen POPs chemicals—chlordane, heptachlor, aldrin, dieldrin, mirex, DDT, hexachlorobenzene, toxaphene, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and furans—would be on it,” said Schapiro. “Twenty years ago, the Pesticide Action Network dubbed the pesticides on this list part of the “dirty dozen” and the name stuck.”

“Over half a century, hundreds of millions of tons of these chemicals have been sprayed from nozzles, coated onto seeds, and leaked from factories and waste dumps into the soil and water supply. One of those chemicals, the pesticide DDT, wreaked such damage to the ecosystem that biologist Rachel Carson was prompted to write Silent Spring, a book that helped trigger the rise of today’s environmental movement.”

US AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES DUMP TOXIC WASTE IN AFRICA AND OTHER COUNTRIES

This seven minute video story sickens any human being with any sense of a moral and ethical foundation. Again, remember that 72,000 plus chemicals always find their way around the world through the air, water and ground.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/528.177310-American-corporation-dumps-toxic-waste-in-Africa-Censored-BBC-story

COAL BURNING AND MERCURY CONTAMINATION OF OUR SKIES AND RIVERS

A Free Library informational article said, “Some 60,000 U.S. children are born each year with developmental impairments triggered by fetal exposure to methyl mercury, usually as a result of their moms having eaten tainted fish. To limit the rain of mercury from human activities, regulators have focused on curbing emissions of inorganic mercury from coal burning. However, Lindberg notes, although chemists assumed that mercury could become methylated in the air, they couldn't show it.”

PVC: THE POISON PLASTIC

“What’s so bad about PVC plastic?” you ask.

“Unlike the many plastics made without chlorine, PVC poses serious environmental health threats from the start,” reported at www.chej.org. “The production of PVC requires the manufacture of raw chemicals, including highly polluting chlorine, and cancer-causing vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and ethylene dichloride (EDC). Communities surrounding U.S. vinyl chloride chemical facilities, half of which are in Louisiana, suffer from serious toxic chemical pollution of their groundwater supplies, surface waters and air.
Residents of the town of Mossville, Louisiana had dioxin levels in their blood that were three times higher than normal.”

Another aspect of plastic’s dangerous side effects stems from citizens unknowingly drinking from plastic bottles where the plastic chemicals leach into the liquid. Additionally, many citizens microwave their food inside plastic containers that also leach into the food—slowly poisoning the individual.

TOXIC AIR EMISSIONS ALL OVER THE USA

Jonathan Campbell at http://www.cqs.com/emswburn.htm, said, “Incinerators represent a special environmental threat, because the combustion process releases and combines toxic materials in household and medical waste into super-toxic air emissions and tons of super-toxic ash. It is also a wasteful technology, as it destroys a huge source of reusable and recyclable materials. Overall, the typical volume reduction accomplished by incinerators is 60-70 percent, which could be accomplished easily and cleanly by comprehensive recycling.

“The EPA estimates that more than 80 percent of the dioxin produced in the U.S. is from municipal and medical waste incinerator air emissions. Tons of mercury, lead, and other heavy metals are emitted in vapor form as well from incinerator stacks. "Modern" pollution controls on these poison factories just move some of the toxic emissions from the air to the ash.

“Incineration is really a hoax: it does not even eliminate landfills. Ash landfills (called monofills) are far more dangerous and toxic than raw trash landfills. Incinerator ash is extremely hazardous, containing dioxin and heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. Ash landfills are a legacy of poison that must be monitored for eternity. They never can become non-toxic, because most of the toxic materials in them - the heavy metals - do not bio-degrade.”

LIFESTOCK POLLUTION AND WATER POLLUTION

• Huge open-air waste lagoons, often as big as several football fields, are prone to leaks and spills. In 1995 an eight-acre hog-waste lagoon in North Carolina burst, spilling 25 million gallons of manure into the New River. The spill killed about 10 million fish and closed 364,000 acres of coastal wetlands to shell fishing.
• From 1995 to 1998, 1,000 spills or pollution incidents occurred at livestock feedlots in 10 states and 200 manure-related fish kills resulted in the death of 13 million fish.

• Runoff of chicken and hog waste from factory farms in Maryland and North Carolina is believed to have contributed to outbreaks of Pfiesteria piscicida, killing millions of fish and causing skin irritation, short-term memory loss and other cognitive problems in local people.
• Nutrients in animal waste cause algal blooms, which use up oxygen in the water, contributing to a "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico where there's not enough oxygen to support aquatic life. The dead zone fluctuates in size each year, extending over 5,800 square miles during the summer of 2004 and stretching over 7,700 square miles during the summer of 1999. [Latest reports show that zone at 10,000 square miles in 2010]

These days, my grandfather would have to retract his words because they no longer apply to 21st century America. Again, I ask you dear reader, what do you think will happen to our environment and quality of life in the United States of America with another added 100 million people? At some point, all this poisoning of our natural world will return to our children and other living creatures in accelerating and decidedly nasty ways.

If any of us, no matter what our race, creed or color might be, refuse to engage our U.S. Congress as we have not for 30 years as to the population/immigration equation—our children will find themselves living in a terribly degraded America where the American Dream will be described by the history books as a ‘fleeting fantasy’ from the era of 1950 to 2010.
